World AIDS Day(s) in Hagen and at Thalia

AIDS-Hilfe Hagen and the Thalia bookshop in Hagen have been working together for a long time. Both can already look back on 10 years of co-operation. For at least as long, volunteers have been wrapping up the books and gifts they have bought during the Advent season to mark World AIDS Day by focussing on people affected by HIV, their relatives and prevention, to remind them of this and to collect a few euros as a donation for the work of AIDS-Hilfe.

To mark this long-standing tradition, the two Hagen co-operation partners have come up with something special.

Mrs Förster (branch manager of the Thalia bookshop) is beaming:

On World AIDS Day (Friday, 1 December) from 3.00 to 4.30 pm, four boys from Phoenix Hagen will be practising the delicate and fine motor skills of wrapping your books and gifts with love and heart.’ And further: ‘Maybe you'll even get an autograph or two.’

The very next day, from 10.30 to 17.00, two other personalities will have the floor and hopefully your appreciative ear. Sven Söhnchen and Britta Diedrich, known from many readings, will read stories. Many stories and chapters from the past and present. And the stories about AIDS are true to the motto of this year's World AIDS Day ‘different than you think’. And they will make Sven's hat go round, who is hoping for many ‘silent’ donations for his AIDS relief organisation that don't jingle too loudly. But don't worry. We are also happy to receive ‘hard currency’.

‘In books lives the soul of all time that has been’

Thomas Carlyle, a Scottish essayist and historian, already knew this.

But did you know, for example, that Deutsche AIDS-Hilfe has been around for 40 years? And that the counselling centre - here in Hagen - has been around for 36 years? So many years of ‘time gone by’, including around the topics of love, sex and crime, HIV/AIDS. History is made. Stories too. But above all, they are experienced and told. Where do you find most of the books? In a bookshop, of course. Imagine, they have so many that they even have to sell some to make room for more.

Every Friday and Saturday during Advent, volunteers from AIDS-Hilfe wrap presents for you in return for a small donation.

In addition:

1. 12. 2023 5 pm Wreath-laying ceremony in memory of those who died as a result of AIDS at the Karl-Ernst-Osthaus-Museum (at the so-called‘ Cold Gate’).

From 5.15 pm: Collection of donations and distribution of bows made from delicious shortcrust pastry at the Hagen Christmas market.

05 and 06 December 2023 Father Christmas from AIDS-Hilfe visits children and grandparents in Hagen primary schools and old people's homes.

12.12. Christmas party at the Hagen AIDS service organisation.

And on 13 December 2023, the last opportunity to be tested for HIV and sexually transmitted infections this year.

Instead of Last Christmas, Last Rapid Test.
